Atlases are great…roads are great and we are indebted to the Romans for lovely long ones !!! If it weren’t for roads cars would have a hard time !..as would hitchikers......... and rabbits and other animals would not know where to get run over !!

So, who names a new road ?........who names the old roads ?

If I want to name a road what do I have to do apart from build it first !

Not at all sure what this has to do with general science (excepting if you are looking at it from a perspective of social engineering and social psychology), but I would guess the guy who names the road is the guy who controls the money that pays for the road, which for most local roads, would be the local council.

Ofcourse, there are names and there are names.  Names can come about by customary usage that are different to the name of the street sign, but the only name that goes on the street sign is that which the council will allow to go on the street sign.

There are, ofcourse, private estates that do not have any council money spent one them; but I would guess the same maxim applies – he who holds the cheque book decides the name (subject to such niceties as the name being legal, not defamatory, not a breach of trademark, or anything similar).

I remember once posting a link to a nifty little site  that once you had input your postal code it would return within a geographical parameter all the strangely quirkily named places nearby...if I can find it again I''ll post it here.

George, you're right...at the time I was having a little more success accessing the general science thread but have now moved this to just chat....oh !!..and congrats on reaching a millennium posts !!!

Last few day's I was keeping an eye on it as it was getting closer, and I was going to post a great big HOORAY when I got through; but it somehow slipped passed without my even noticing it.

As I mentioned earlier, my brain is not particularly well in gear at the moment.

There is a road up north called Minge Lane... apparently the sign keeps getting stolen for some reason. The council are looking into changing the name of the road. []
