I have to say I do love pistachios !..I can quite happily sit down and shell and ingest a bagful !!..and I love to offer my nuts to wifey too !.......

I would have to say that honey roasted cashew nuts are my all time favourite but I am a tad concerned.

Nuts are supposed to be good for you yes ?...but they are so fattening too ?...is it really a case of moderation when it comes to eating nuts ?..The pistachios are salty also and I imagine the cashews to be even more fattening.

So, does the goodness in nuts outweigh the badness of nuts ? or are they in equal measure ? Is there a large scope of variety between the different nuts ?

What is your favourite nut ? (and I mean the edible type of nut ...not some title afforded to an idiot !! )

Nutmeg is supposedly mildly psychoactive:-
"Myristicin and elemicin are believed to be the chemical constituents responsible for the subtle hallucinogenic properties of nutmeg oil ".

Perhaps other nuts have psychochemical effects, so could cause chemical dependence, (addiction).

To get any effect you have to consume a dangerous amount of fresh nutmeg.( if its not fresh them the amount you will need will kill you) If fresh stuff does not kill you (and I am not joking) then you might experience a mild to a server hallucinogenic experience there is no way to be certain. No ,matter how much you consume you run the risk of getting very ill and be sick for a number of days after, altogether a very unpleasant experiences even if you survive. I can think of many more present ways to risk death. Like base jumping or even walking blindfolded across a motorway.

I was not suggesting that anyone take hallucinogenic substances, if you click on the Wikkipedia Nutmeg link I posted it gives grave warnings about taking large quantities of nutmeg:-

" Risks and toxicity
In low doses, nutmeg produces no noticeable physiological or neurological response. Large doses of 7.5 g or more are dangerous, potentially inducing convulsions, palpitations, nausea, eventual dehydration, and generalized body pain. In amounts of 1.0 g or more it is a mild to medium hallucinogen, producing visual distortions and a mild euphoria similar to that derived from Marijuana. Nutmeg contains chemicals called MAO inhibitors which disable the brain's ability to stop amines, found in most common foods, from affecting the brain and body. A test was carried out on the substance which showed that, when ingested in large ammounts, Nutmeg takes on a similar chemical make-up to MDMA (ecstasy). However, use of nutmeg as a recreational drug is unpopular, because of its strong taste and sand like texture. Also there are potential painful physical side effects, the risk of Nutmeg Psychosis (see below) and the inconveniently long span for which the effects of a single dose can persist. A user will not experience a peak until approximately six hours after ingestion, and effects can linger for up to three days afterwards. Even in smaller doses, Nutmeg can still be toxic. Ingestion of as little as 5 g may cause dry mouth, fast pulse, fever and flushing. It has amphetamine-like effects and may lead to the ingestion of large volumes of water. There is no specific antidote; the adverse effects wear off after 24 hours (or more) of rest.

Nutmeg is extremely toxic when injected intravenously. Nutmeg can also cause liver damage if used regularly in large quantities. Nutmeg has in the past been used as an abortifacient. Nutmeg may also be fatal if used regularly in large quantities, but this is not a problem while cooking, since small amounts are used."

its all to do witht the type of fat in nuts, just like that in olive oil. a small amount every day will be good for you, and cheesily enough, can actually help control cholesterol, but going all out on ten bags of salty peanuts every day will not only give you the ****s, it will also make you fat.

oily foods, such as nuts, oily fish and olive oil in moderation are actually essential for a healthier lifestyle.

As a child, we used to spend most of our time out playing in the fields, mostly housing estates now

We used to recognise certain stems of grass which we learned had spicy peppery nodules on their roots. We called these pignuts, we used to scrape the thin skin from them and eat them, they were lovely but don't know what they were called as only remembered them as pignuts, presumably pigs liked to dig them up and the locals, including my home had pig houses at the botom of the gardens and most people kept either chickens or a pig in my grandparents days. Grandad Field kept a horse and cart and bull terriers in the 1930's and onwards after he survived the war.

This takes a little while to learn to identify but once you have tasted the sweet nuts you will learn to identify it easily. The nuts are best fresh and eaten either whilst out foraging or as soon as you get back to where you have water to wash them. It will take a little practice to perfect the art of digging them up, you will need a small trowel or a strong spoon. The tubers are about 2-6 inches below the surface. The stem usually bends slightly in which case you will not find the nut directly below the stem of the plant

Hazel nuts are what we in California refer to as filberts and IKO they are delishious!
