The frequency of communication for the Apollo missions was the s band.

It was about the highest frequency that could be achieved using semiconductor techniques at the time although I think that the main transmitters may have been TWTs  It is about the lowest frequency that modest sized high gain dish antennas can be used. This allows low power transmitters to be used.  It offers the broad bands necessary for the simple analog TV signals used at the time.  There were several lower frequency and lower bandwidth backup systems.
