Why do some people think noon and midnight can be defined as either 12:00 AM or 12:00 PM? What's the matter with them?

12MN and 12MD for MidNight and MidDay !!

That's a great idea.

BTW, don't ever take a flight that's scheduled to leave at 12 am. There's a pretty good chance you'll show up for the flight on the wrong day  [:D]

I've had a couple that have been scheduled for 11:59 PM.  I was so relieved--if it had been 12 AM I'm sure I would have screwed it up.

but, strangely, their analog timepieces only have twelve divisions. (Fess up Matt - and don't try to tell us you actually wear a digital watch.)

I promise you faithfully the only number on my watch is a 24 and it is divided into 12ths/60ths and 120ths

After a few years of shipping you lose am and pm - I might well say 4 in the morning or 6 in the evening, but I really would never use the term 4.35am or 6.45pm  (unless I was translating for landlubbers).  I remember saying on saturday when asked when the rugby was being shown that the game started at oh nine hundred rather than the normal half past the hour and that highlights were on at 1700 - the person I was talking to knew me well enough not be be surprised

[;D] Yeah Imatfaal. "3 bells of the first dog watch" does sound much more natural.

Hate to quibble (mof I love to quibble)  but at three bells of the first dog watch you would have missed the first 30 minutes of the highlights.  The third bell of a watch is 90 minutes into the watch so the third bell of the first dog watch is 1600 + 0130 = 1730  (see you can even do maths with 24 hour clock)

but as an aussie and a pomme we would probably both be quite happy to miss NZ's moment of triumph
