Thermodynamics?
« on: 23/10/2011 20:46:57 »
-Pretend we have a cube 1cm x 1cm x 1cm of a magical material with a heat capacity, temperature, and thermal conductivity that allows it to release 40gigajoules of heat energy into the surrounding air in the space of a second. (the air was 25oC prior to that one second of intense heat)

-It releases heat primarily by conductivity and convection, it's thermal radiation is minimal.

?!? What would happen to the air around the cube? What kind of temperatures would be measured in the air 1m, 5m, 10m, 50m, and 100m away? How long would it take for the air in a diameter 1m around the cube to return to 25oC?

Why are you asking the same question over and over again?

By an amazing coincidence, it looks as if BC was experiencing a similar problem  [;D]

Nope, I replied twice because it was the second and third time he asked the same question.

Understood - I was trying to be funny. I merged the two identical topics, and your replies showed up in that order.

The materiel does not need to be magical an adequate quantity of matter/antimatter could well be confined in a 1 cm cube but the evolution of energy would be much more rapid than 1 second and would consist of gamma radiation as pointed out.
