12 species of flies get federal protection

HONOLULU (AP) -- Twelve species of rare flies known for their elaborate courtship displays and found only in the Hawaiian Islands are now protected under the Endangered Species Act.

So, next time one is in Hawaii (not that I ever have been), and one takes up a rolled newspaper to swat a fly, one could be committing a criminal offence.

Thankfully, oner here I can still used rolled up newspapers with impunity.
