« on: 18/09/2012 03:30:05 »
Mathe Mzamane William  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi Chris

I want to know more about chemistry. What is the addition of Sulfuric Acid, Sodium Metasilicate, Sodium Hydroxide flakes and Aluminum produce? What is danger of adding the chemicals?

I hope I can learn something from you Chris.

Kinds regards

Mzamane

What do you think?

Do you mean all together? Otherwise, it seems a homework...

I didn't actually try to write and figure out the reaction (so this may be wrong), but I would say that there is a good chance that when the sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide mix, and acid-base reaction will occur.

I think that it would be a rather dangerous experiment.
Don't do it.

I'm no chemist, but pouring sulphuric acid on sodium hydroxide would create a lot of heat. I wouldn't want to be around when it starts to boil and spit, which would be pretty much instantly.

So I'll go along with BC, don't do it.
