Street lights in Reykjavik and several other towns in Iceland were plunged into darkness as street lights were turned off to help star-gazers get a better view of the night sky.

Thousands of people turned out to stare at the heavens, although rain and clouds obscured the view from some places.

Organiser Andri Snaer Magnason said: "All the streets lights are off, we can see a few stars. I would have liked to have a completely clear sky, but you can't have everything. But it was nice."
