I don't think it is really about what there was, or was not, before the start of the universe; but rather it is about that whatever there may or may not have been can have no connection to us, and so for all practical purposes, there could be nothing we can know about.

From a pragmatic perspective, if you cannot know about something (either directly or indirectly), then it cannot be part of your reality.
