There's a good programme on the subject on the BBC radio4 website in the "in our time" series.

This deals with Poincare's life and the recent likely proof of the conjecture by a russian mathematician.

Basically it deals with ways of identifying the topologically significant shapes that exist in all dimensional systems apparantly 3 and 4 dimensional systems are the most complex and difficult to get a grip on!
