Fish.....out of water !
« on: 01/11/2006 20:39:23 »
I often see on Fishing programs the fisherman spending a good few minutes diplaying the fish they have caught out of the water !

Obviously this is not killing the fish as when they return the fish it happily swims away, but is it not akin to us drowning in water ?

What happens to a fish when it is out of water, ?..isn't it suffering terribly ?

Sometimes it's out of water for 5-10 minutes !...how can it survive for so long ?...is there not damage being done to the fish ?

Difficult to say how much long term damage is done to the fish, but I would agree that it must be suffering.

Thanks George....

I too wonder if the fish is left with some sort of organ damage when returned !...are there not an fish anatomists out there ?

I do know that I hate sport fishing because of the suffering. Fish begin to dry up and can no longer take in the water after a point out of water.. we had one that almost died because he got a huge rock stuck in his mouth..and couldn't take in the water through his gills! Hubby had to come home and do surgery on its mouth to remove the rock. he was lifeless. So hubby pushed the fish back and forth through the water forcing water through his gills for over and hour .. the fish after 10 minutes was showing signs of small movements.. he kept it up until the fishy swam away on his own. He was a Orunda, I think  a large Fancy Fan Tailed Gold Fish we had had for several years!

Okay, I want to know if any of you have ever performed cpr on a fish?  How would you do it, through the gills?  Also, when doing your compressions...which finger would be best..the pinkie?  LOL

I used to go fishing and on occasions when i caught a large carp or tench if i noticed any diseased tissue or parasitic infection i would clean  up the wound and place some antiseptic on any infected tissue during which the fish could be out of water for about five minutes or so and as long as it was kept moist the fish would suffer no harm.
And if your wondering how i know , well many of these fish but mainly the big specimens were well known and would be caught again maybe the next week, next month or next year and a large proportion of them are still alive and well today.

THANK YOU for this Michael,

I think it has been speculated that fish may even get used to being caught as it entails a tasty snack after all !..

They know, or have got used to be being put back and as you say sometimes the same fish are regularly caught !

LOretta I believe that fish do not posess lungs so it would be pointless to administer such Cpr unless you were quite sure he was really a lovely delectible able bodied hunk of a man that had been changed in to a fish( Mr. Limpet Perhaps) and was crying out for a young maidens kiss to revive him!
