Well, I have my new computer mostly up and working - silly me, thought I'd be clever and try using Windows XP x64, and that has caused me more headaches than all the hardware issues - my printer does not have drivers for 64 bit Windows, my old virus checker does not work on 64 bit, so have had to get another virus checker, and find that Real Audio does not work under 64 bit, so have downloaded Ral Alternative, which does the same job.

Had a hard disk failure, but at least it proved that RAID5 does what it is supposed to do.

Still have to put in the floppy drive (have an old floppy drive in there at present), and change one of the fans - the components all ended up arriving in bits and pieces, so those were the last bits to arrive, and I have not yet installed them.

And, yes, I have skype working (not sure if you will have enough bandwith to use skype without running some sort of broadband connection). It is very nice not running out of hard disk (I have 500GB of disk available - OK, actually 750GB, but because of RAID5, 250GB is not accesible). The system is a bit noisy, because I put as many fans as I could in there to keep it cool (maybe changing over that last fan might reduce noise a little - I hope so).

Would be very suprised if they can charge for basic skype in the very near future, since so much hardware has been sold on the back of skype being free (there is a charge for using Skype to non-skype users - e.g. skype to landline) - but ultimately, yes, I would guess much of what we expect for free on the Internet will be charged for, including skype.

Anyway, if skype does start charging, there are other alternatives - although skype is the largest VoIP network, if it begins to upset its uset base, there are alternaitives that user base can turn to.
