OK - there were no guesses over the last 48 hrs, so here is a clue. This edible thing is in its natural state, prior to any cooking or cleaning process.

Is it skin on a chicken/duck, or some sort of animal?

It is technically a sort of fruit, I suppose - it's the fruiting body of something. You should be just about there!

Nope. This fruit is not picked from a tree.

So it's grown in the ground? And it is technically a fruit? Is it related to a melon?

The roots grow in the ground [;)] and the fruit rises directly from it. There is no stem.

Perhaps I should clarify what I mean by "no stem". There is no woody structure such as you would get for tomatoes or melons for example, from which you would pick the "fuit". It would be collected as a whole, and the whole thing (less roots) can be eaten after cooking.
