The "thing" is not a tree wasp, but the response of the tree to the wasp laying eggs. It is a gall, and I've called this one Asterix. Look, I'll show you.



The hole you see is the exit hole when the wasp is fully developed. The gall is woody tissue deposited by the tree around the wasp's egg, similar to the way that a pearl is formed. The wasp in question is a Gall wasp, not a Tree wasp.
