Nope,

The substrate is MADE from rocks.

So its silica? Is it like one of those dressings that doctors use to reduce scarring or some other thin stretchy material used in a labratory? Not sure what its called but i have something in mind :)

I am sorry, Milly, but No. You are right about the silica but please be advised that silica is so common in the rocks of the earth that it acts in rocks and minerals as carbon does in organic materials.

Quote
Silicone, particularly the gel form, is used in bandages and dressings …

Silicone is often mistakenly referred to as "silicon." Although silicones contain silicon atoms, they are not made up exclusively of silicon, and have completely different physical characteristics from elemental silicon.

It looks to me like the droplet (water?) is sitting upon another fluid because I think I can see a little distortion in the surface due to the weight of the droplet.  Whatever the droplet is sitting on doesn't seem to be producing sharp reflections though, unlike those visible in the droplet itself.  There also appears to be a layer of vapour laying on the surface (of the fluid?), which to me, indicates that it is either very hot or very cold.

If the surface is very hot then the vapour could be the steam produced by the droplet as it sits upon the hot surface, which could be something like molten glass.

The sharp reflections in the droplet seem to indicate quite a large open area, relative to the size of the droplet, around it.

Um... your thinking on "caterpillar" is close in some way...

It is not a caterpillar.

It is a kind of flower mimic.
