Science Guy- your serpentine logic never ceases to amaze me! This Velvet Rattlesnake (not sure why they call them rattlesnakes if they have no rattles) had a hissy-fit when I disturbed his nap. Lucky for me he was somewhat visible.

Yes, I was thinking it could be a tree burrough, Our redwood trees produce some beautifull redwood burroughs. but the color would be different for redwood.. Do other trees produce burroughs like the Redwoods?

It looks like a deers eye with it's beautiful lashes!

By the way what kind of wasps or bees built that nst that one is quite beautiful I have removed similar nests from my houseThey like to attach them under the overhand.. And they build them incredibly fast.. One morning I went out and saw this mud like dried substance on the overhand and thought it was a couple mud daubers or others birds building a nes, I went to work and come home and it was about six inches down.. I was fascinated.. By the same time the next day it was completed, but it was huge and hung way down I would guess it to have been18 inches wide circumferance and about 25 inches long or so.. Ver much like that one except not with the beautiful whipped look. Very nice .. what part of the country are those from??

Not an eye or lashes, but it is animal.
I always called them bald hornets- this nest was in central Alabama. I ran across it while doing some geological work for a client. (I could only wish I was in Alabama now- we haven't been north of the freezing mark for almost a month).

OK Bass, knowing you, you were prospecting in New Guinea or the other country on the island, perhaps even northern Australia - for gold - and came across a bower bird or Bird of Paradise or some other named avian creature.

Again, it could just be a clean pot bellied pig.
