I am thinking that it's an external collapsible escape ladder housed in a container so that if there was a fire they could make a great escape !!

(As you've probably guessed, I work at the one in the pictures).

It is located in Northern California.. ie, "Eureka" "Humboldt Bay Nuclear Power plant".. Old PG&E..(Pacific Gas and electric) Decommissioned these days..

There are usually narrow little cells I think they call them insidelike shelves but standing up..LOL I never really looked at the inside of one , but that reminds me of a bat house, anyway, That's my guess!

Yes - it's a bat box!

It's based on a 'Bat Coservation International' design and is apparently quite common in the States. UK boxes tend to be smaller so this is a bit of an experiment. I've seen pictures of 200+ bats in one of these, though I've only just put this one (and two smaller one) on the house. Keeping my fingers crossed that the bats notice it's there!

I hadn't heard about that one. Looked on the NRC website and it shows that it was shutdown in 1976, so a bit before my time in the industry. It only prduced 65 MW - I'm used to a 1200 MW plant, so must have been pretty small.

Yeah I think when you compare to others it is small. They had some sort of controversary over it possibly leaking a little while back and they were wanting to take other measures to protct things, as it sits along the san andreas fault line and still hold sall the chemicals or nueclear stuff involved and the quake we had scard them and they thought it had cracked some thing in the containment containers or some weird thing.. Who Knows I worry constantly about that silly thing!

Hi Karen,

I believe it was shutdown for Seismic improvements but these turned-out to be too difficult so it never started up again. As far as I can gather all the fuel is still on site in the Fuel Pond - though they are in the process of moving to dry cask storage. The ponds are pretty robust, but once the fuel is casked there's nor problem with any size earthquake you might have - those casks are seriously robust!
