What are you grateful for?
« on: 09/01/2007 11:12:38 »
I thought that if I got the flu jab this year that I would be safe. Have you ever felt as if you’ve been trampled over by a few thousand Wilderbeasts on migrations? No, well lucky you. I’m still feeling battered despite it being number of weeks since got this bug. Being a Life Coach you would think it would be easy for me to find the positive side of being flattened. In fact it’s been a real challenge. Staying positive when you are feeling (and I desperately want to use a word here that gives a more organic flavour) unwell is a test.

I bet it is payback for all the times I said cheerfully to others as I quickly stepped sideways to avoid being hit “find the positive side”. I can still see the wicked smile on my wife’s face as she said to me as I lay helplessly in bed “But Hadrian it’s all in your reality”!!  To weak to even retort all I could do was to suffer on. I have to say it’s my own fault for being habitually positive at the wrong time which is a real art form in itself. Now that I am starting to feel less unwell I have been thinking “What can I take from this that’s positive?”  Well first of all, how about how lucky I am that I was not really sick at all. Not sick like some, who have to endure pain everyday of their lives. How lucky I am that I have people around me who care for me enough not to put a plastic bag over my head despite all my complaining. Not like the many isolated and lonely people all around us who live alone and hidden.  How lucky I am to know that soon I will be feeling well and good again, and that I have the awareness inside to feel of this sense of wellbeing coming back. Not like those who are cut off from their positive feelings due to depression and other mental health issues. They are largely invisible people who live out their lives in unhappiness and sadness all around us.

Yes there are many things I can take from having the Wilderbeast flu that are positive. I have even learnt a new daily ritual for myself. If like me you listen to the RTE 1 Radio then you know that twice day every day they ring out The Angelus. I have to admit for many years I did not pay much attention to the bells. Then one day while I was sick I began to think about all the things I should be for be grateful for. Between each toll of the bell I would think of something good I have in my life. Things like my family, or my eyes to see with and all the other thousands things that make up my world. So twice a day for a few moments I now devote myself to being grateful. In that privet space I choose not to be negative or cynical, for just a few moments. I am even grateful for Wilderbeasts bugs and all.

I am grateful.....

In a time that is so negative for me, I am grateful that someone comes along and says/writes exactly what I need to hear/read at exactly the precise time I need to hear/read it.  Thanks for the reminder Hadrian!

This may be minuscule in comparison, but I am grateful for the people who post the happenings of Coronation Street on wikipedia, as the shows I see are 10 months behind... small things :)
