Why is it that we all begin as females in early  uterine development ?

Isn't it because all of us have at least one X chromosome? I think all eggs are 'X' and sperm can be 'X' or 'Y', hence the sperm dictates the sex of the foetus. so females are 'XX' and males are 'XY'.

the Y chromosome is very small, and only contains a few genes, which confer maleness. there really isn't that much difference between teh sexes really! I would guess that these genes are switched on later, or at least their effects cannot be seen until later, hence the embryo initially developing as female.

Fishy is right. Somewhere around 2 months the Y chromosome does this funky little thing, and causes the ovaries to become testes and the citoris to pop outside the body and become a penis. Not exactly sure on why it happens but the above post makes alot of sense.

 Well Robert it was brought to my attention that I may have seemed over sensitive about your Question to me. Let me apologise if that is the way it come across. As All I was commenting on was that I did not know how your question related to us all starting out as females...LOL I still don't get it... would you enlighten me? Me thinks  (and remember me is a well trained medical doctor of many years !!!............yeah right !!)...me thinks what le Robert was getting at was that until spermy-wormy decided whether me is a girl or a boy that me already has boobies that will either become blokey ones ..or nice big wobbly girly ones !!...so..until  spermy-wormy does the deed we  all have nipple joy to begin with.
