How Many States Of Matter Are There ?
« on: 08/02/2007 19:42:42 »
My daughter reckons there's just the three ..solid, gas, liquid....!!

Me has tried to explain that there are others too but ...well...me is just a sheep and all I can do is say "Bleat it ........shamorr !!..OW !!!.."..

so...can you please help me in describing the states of matter and their terms so that I may appear all brainy and wise to my daughter *even though she is siting here watching my type this *...DOH !!!

..thank you.

Solid, Gas, Liquid, Plasma &, I believe, Einstein-Bosen Condensate. Probably more somewhere.

Perhaps baby poo should be added. Damnedest stuff I have ever had to associate with.

Excellent....thank you Doctor Beaver....The ' Probably More Somewhere' state just rolls off your tongue and I immediately like it as my favourite.

Got to agree there with Jimmy Boy....recently my 18 month old has created only what I can imagine are new states altogether !!

Would you call neutronium a "solid" or is it different enough to be classified separately?  Surely it's more different from a solid than a liguid is different from a gas.  Then there's the mass within a black hole. Which we can't know much about anyway. Unless our universe IS a black hole!  Dark matter, I guess, would come under "probably more out there somewhere".

Just googled Einstein Bose Condensate.  Where can I get some?  I want to put it in my freezer when the power goes out.

But I think, but cannot find, that there was even a discussion which pretty much asked exactly the same question.
