Why do stomach's growl?

Jordan Star asked the Naked Scientists:
What is your stomach saying if it makes a growling noise? That only happens if it is empty. If your stomach could talk it would say feed me. Also, if you have an itch on your body. Why does scratching relieve the itch. These questions are coming to you from across the pond, ocean. Why is the Atlantic Ocean called the pond?
What do you think?

Humorous understatement.
