Hi All,

I continue experiments with Niacin Acid tablets. Seems the effect is stable for me, e.g. no POIS symptoms if tablets are taken 1 hour before "O" in dosage of 150 mg. I've tried this trick 3 times so far, and every time - no POIS.

Warning! Taking Niacin in high doses might cause damage to your liver, please consult with your doctor first

Victor

Hi Victor, Thanks for the continuing reports. I am the same, If I continue to take Niacin my symptoms are much less that I would if I did not take the Niacin prior to O. I am still taking 300mg at the moment.

Just a note: One time, after I had just had a meal, I took 300mg. I could not tell if or when I had a flush and lost track of time. I think I only waited 30 minutes or so before I. That time, my POIS symptoms returned to their usual state which lasted a few days. I have learnt now to wait about 60 minutes like you so before O.

It does seem this has everything to do with timing, and that timing also depends on if you have a full stomach or not.

I have read as well that taking Niacin just after a meal, reduces the flush. So you had both going against you. Victor had noted that it seems to work best, with a flush, and the flush should at least begin to subside before the "O".

I have been taking Niacin for over a year now and have been benefiting greatly from it.  I have extended into the higher doses above three grams per day.  If anyone is interested I would suggest looking into a disorder called B3 dependency.  I will be attaching some quality articles I have found about the potential for Niacin to be used in clinical settings to treat anxiety.

http://orthomolecular.org/library/jom/2005/pdf/2005-v20n03-p167.pdf

Thank you ophicus1213, the papers are very interesting.

Btw, I noticed that jumping to high doses of Niacin Acid from the start is not good and it can cause negative response from liver and heart. But if you continue smoothly increasing dose, the body somehow adapts to it and there is no any discomfort even from the doses that caused terrible effects at the start.

Victor

If it can work at 150-300 mg just before orgasm, why would you take it daily to raise the threshold and dose to such high values?

Taking it less often (as little as possible) avoids raising the dose to such levels.

Yes, Dave, I'm taking it as less often as possible, by high doses I meant 150 mg. As you remember the first dose I took was 100mg and I felt terrible, my liver and heart started to go crazy. But now with 150mg dose I feel just fine. So, I just recommend to take your time and let your body adapt to Niacin a bit, before making decision that Niacin is not a good fit for you.

Btw, forgot to say. I tried having 2 - 3 O's after taking 150mg in Niacin Acid tablets and had no POIS after that. Seems effect of niacin lasts for many hours.

Does anyone think we may have underlying infectios of our immune or nervous systems?
When we orgasm it aggravates the infection. Some people may have lyme disease or parasite infection.

Hello,

I'm new to this site and just found out that there is such a thing as POIS.  I thought maybe I was the only one in the world.

Does anyone have a list of doctors who will test for semen allergy?  What treatment options are available now?  Are there any studies being conducted where they are recruiting new patients?

Besides semen allergy treatment, are there any other types of treatments available?

As has been usual this past year, it seems there has been a lot of good progress since my last visit!  I want to bring up a topic that has recurred now and then, but hasn't had a full fledged discussion.

In short, I think POIS (possibly for many of us) is a type of addiction.  It results from unusual connections made in the brain, around the age of puberty, stemming from a pronounced response to sexual stimuli.  This has caused us to be 'addicted' to sexual stimulation, and has disrupted the normal neurochemical response to orgasm.  The susceptibility to this problem is likely genetic, and can be triggered by our environment.  Perhaps it is also a result of a physical brain abnormality (e.g. pituitary adenoma).  Now here's my (longer) observations:

- When I was 12, I first discovered internet pornography.  While I had not achieved orgasm up until that point, and would not for another 1.5 years, I found myself very mentally stimulated by the images.  And since there was the internet, there was a limitless supply.  I was looking at very 'normal' pornography (e.g. playboy type material), but I could tell within months that I was addicted.  I was spending a lot of time looking, and at times when I went on the internet, I would feel the almost uncontrollable urge to look at pornography.  My reasoning, as a 12 year old, was that although I felt addicted, I was not ingesting any dangerous chemical -- it was just a natural response to something -- so I was not going to physically harm myself like a normal drug addict might.  Nonetheless, I felt guilty and basically gave up pornography, with a few notable lapses, until I could achieve orgasm 1.5 years later, at which pointed I resumed my pornography use.

- Now I note that when I see pornography, my response to orgasm is altered, and even if I do not have orgasm, I will feel very stunned after looking at pornography -- poor short term memory, difficult focusing, etc.  It feels like I have been bumped on the head very hard.  I also notice that if I go without orgasm for over 8 days, I end up with similar problems.  And I am still very much addicted.  Though I do not view pornography more than once a week (and usually less than once every couple months), the urge is still there.  I even notice that if I do look at pornography, sometimes I will develop a tremor.

Unfortunately there is a stigma attached to something like pornography addiction.  Probably there is some assumption that anyone who would be 'addicted' is perverted, etc.  This is of course rubbish.  These days younger generations probably look at pornography quite regularly -- much more regularly than I do despite my addiction -- because of its wide accessibility.  I also have reasonably normal sexual tastes.

So please tell me if you relate to this story at all.

Has anyone noticed that POIS affects their metabolism?  When I am OUT of POIS, I get hungry very easily, especially if I eat any sweet food.  When I am IN POIS, my metabolism appears more normal.  I do not get hungry easily, and sweet foods do not make me especially hungry.

This has been noticeable for the past 8 years or so.

I'M reading each of you since almost 2 1/2 years from now. I'M 51 years old and I'M a pois sufferer since 12 years now. But like some of you, I tried NIACIN recently and the result are very very good for me.

1) The day of O, I'M taking 300 mg 30 minutes before O.
2) If I don't sleep about one hour after O, I'M 50-60% POIS free, IF I sleep for maximum 1 hour after O' when I wake up, Im 90% free.
3) The day after O (day 1), I'm taking 100 mg when I wake up in the morning. During the day, I take other 100 mg when I feel that POIS is coming back. I can take maximum 900 mg the day of O and maximum 500 mg the day after.
4) Day 2, I'M taking 100 mg in the morning, an another 100 mg in the afternoon and I'M still 90 % POIS free.
5) Day 3, 100 mg and I'M 95% POIS free.
6) DAy 4, 100 mg, 100% POIS free.
I must say that I'M very happy whith this result and my girl friend too!

Demografx, I didn't receive your mail that every one must receive from you. Tank you.

In addition to serving our own informational interests, the resources listed above can be useful for you to show our credibility to the medical world - which often shows little understanding and is sometimes skeptical of our condition: POIS has scientific underpinnings and POIS is not "just another psychological problem" related to sex - to be treated by the psychiatric/psychotherapeutic community. All of this information can greatly help you to fight the immediate reaction of some doctors: so just tell them, "IT'S NOT 'ALL IN OUR HEADS'! "

Also, it can be helpful when dealing with medical professionals to point out the successful existence of our rapidly growing forum, which has already been referenced in respectable sources such as the Journal of Sexual Medicine (Dr. Waldinger's study), British Medical Journal and wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postorgasmic_illness_syndrome

For over 4 years, our POIS forum has attracted over 200 POIS sufferers worldwide who have posted here, research on an additional 200 sufferers elsewhere on the internet, plus over 1,300,000 page visits. Not bad for a rare malady!

SEARCH THE FORUM WITH GOOGLE

We have an overwhelming amount of data: more than 4 years' worth of posts (over  10,000 posts!) from 200+ Forum members, and an additional 200 POIS sufferers found elsewhere on the Internet by Member B_Jim.

In the Google search box, type
whatever-it-is-you're-interested-in-finding-out[space]POIS[space]site:http://thenakedscientists.com/

for example, I tried
nocturnal emission POIS site:http://thenakedscientists.com/

and 740 results came up for "nocturnal emission" within the Forum.

be careful with spaces (you can use them before the word "site") and no-spaces (everything after the word "site")

Google even provides you results with the Message# for each result. But Message #'s do change, so be patient and look for the approximate Message#.

Hi, my name is Katie and I spoke with Daveman and Demografx last week about a documentary series we are working on.  We’re looking for someone with POIS to participate and share their story on camera.  Please contact me if you are interested or have any questions: Katie.sciortino@gmail.com.  I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks!

I'm a journalist interested in doing a story on POIS for a major men's magazine. For it, I'm looking for a few men who would be willing to go on the record and talk about their experience with the disease. (You can remain anonymous, if you'd like.) If you're interested in being interviewed or have questions about the story, please email me at laura.leu@gmail.com

Sex and Depression: In the Brain, if Not the Mind

Tank you.
Hi Kingkong,

Thank you for your report! I'm glad that Niacin helps you too.

From what you write it looks like you are taking too much Niacin after O, whereas the point is to take the minimum _necessary_ dose of Niacin _prior_ to O so that you don't have to take any Niacin after O, because taking Niacin after O has far less effect. You said that you wait 30 minutes, sounds like too short time before O. After taking niacin pills we usually wait 60 minutes, you should feel the flush and let it starting go away before you have the O.

Hi King Kong, that is FANTASTIC News. I am very glad Niacin is working well for you - As Victor noted, one of the key things which we need to try and do is to reduce the amount of Niacin being taken.

Having said that, I also feel I need to take Niacin for the following couple of days in order to avoid going deeper into POIS. If I take Additional Niacin I feel POIS around 5-10% like yourself, if I don't I can sometimes feel it a lot stronger 30%-40%

It is obviously VERY Early days in the Niacin testing - But your results and reporting is very very exciting.
