On a podcast some time back, there was a guest on who was compiling songs whose lyrics had a scientific angle. ie they contained the words chemistry, etc.

i have done a quick search and to my amazement not found a topic relating to this! Do you have a favourite sone that has a scientific angle in either the title or the lyrics?

well why not post them here, so we can all sing along.....

ok, i'll start off:

Electrolite by R.E.M.

Your eyes are burning holes through me
I'm gasoline
I'm burnin' clean

Twentieth century go and sleep
You're Pleistocene
That is obscene
That is obscene

(chorus)
You are the star tonight
Your sun electric, outta sight
Your light eclipsed the moon tonight
Electrolite
You're outta sight

If I ever want to fly
Mulholland Drive
I am alive

Hollywood is under me
I'm Martin Sheen
I'm Steve McQueen
I'm Jimmy Dean

(repeat chorus)

If you ever want to fly
Mulholland Drive
Up in the sky
Stand on a cliff and look down there
Don't be scared, you are alive
You are alive

(repeat chorus)

Twentieth century go and sleep
Really deep
We won't blink

Your eyes are burning holes through me
I'm not scared
I'm outta here
I'm not scared
I'm outta here

The Phantom Of The Copper Coil

This parody (written by Greg Crowther) is sung to the tune of The Phantom Of The Opera (written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Charles Hart, Richard Stilgoe, and Mike Batt).

Lyrics

SCIENTIST:                               PHANTOM:

Transparent as the wind
That chills my spine,
He lurks inside the lab,
This ghost of mine.
And, buffered heavily
With PO4,
The phantom of the copper coil is there
In the magnet bore.

                                               Each new experiment
                                               Must be rehearsed.
                                               Before you test a man,
                                               You test me first.
                                               You try your protocols
                                               Until I’m sore.
The phantom of the copper coil is there
                                               In the magnet bore.

I think the pulse will work...
                                               I call your bluff.
You’re not a man, you know.
                                               I’m close enough.
And though I wish that you                     And though you wish that I
Could be ignored,                              Could be ignored,
The phantom of the copper coil is there        The phantom of the copper coil is there
In the magnet bore.                          In the magnet bore.

Does this Qualify?

Love Potion Number Nine

The Clovers, The Searchers

I took my troubles down to Madame Rue
You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth
She's got a pad down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
Sellin' little bottles of Love Potion Number Nine

I told her that I was a flop with chics
I've been this way since 1956
She looked at my palm and she made a magic sign
She said "What you need is Love Potion Number Nine"

She bent down and turned around and gave me a wink
She said "I'm gonna make it up right here in the sink"
It smelled like turpentine, it looked like Indian ink
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink

I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine

 ------ guitar solo ------

I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink

I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine
 Love Potion Number Nine
 Love Potion Number Nine
 Love Potion Number Nine

Hows about this one!!

 "What a wonderful world"

(center text)

Don't know much about history
don't know much biology
Don't know much about a science book
don't know much about the French I took
But I do know that I love you
and I know that if you love me, too
what a wonderful world this would be

Don't know much about geography
don't know much trigonometry
Don't know much about algebra
don't know what a slide rule is for
But I did know that one and one is two
and if this one could be with you
what a wonderful world this would be

Now I don't claim to be an 'A' student
but I'm tryin' to be
For maybe be being an 'A' student, baby
I can win your love for me

Don't know much about history
don't know much biology
Don't know much about a science book
don't know much about the French I took
But I do know that I love you
and I know that if you love me, too
what a wonderful world this would be

But I do know that I love you
and I know that if you love me, too
what a wonderful world this would be

Heres a good one!! LOL

MAGNESIUM THE BEAUTIFUL
(to the tune of "America the Beautiful")

For alkyl halides' majesty
Magnesium is meant,
Assisted by completely dry
E-ther-e-al sol-vent.
Magnesium, Magnesium,
A Grignard has M-g,
It's understood, its bonds are good
From C to shining C.

A carbonyl is polarized,
Its carbon end is plus.
A nucleophile will thus attack
The carbon nucleus.
Magnesium, Magnesium,
A Grignard has M-g,
Each one is fond of making bonds
From C to shining C.

Oh, Grignards can make alcohols,
Of types there are but three.
When Grignards add formaldehyde
The product's primary.
Magnesium, Magnesium,
A Grignard has M-g,
Its alkyl group gives out a whoop
As C grabs shining C.

For alcohols, a Grignard and
A carbonyl collide.
A secondary's synthesis
Requires an aldehyde.
Magnesium, Magnesium,
A Grignard has M-g,
And makes a bond to correspond
From C to shining C.

For tertiary alcohols
An ester captures two,
But if you send a ketone, then
Just one Grignard will do.
Magnesium, Magnesium,
A Grignard has M-g,
We don't need zinc to make a link
From C to shining C.

Now if you need an acid of
The carboxylic kind,
Just bubble past a simple gas:
To Grignards it will bind.
Magnesium, Magnesium,
A Grignard has M-g,
It sticks like glue to CO2,
Joins C to lonely C.

One Grignard grabs a nitrile, then
The next leaves it alone.
The product, during workup, hy-
Drolyzes to ketone.
Magnesium, Magnesium,
Is held in high regard
By chemists, who give honor to
Monsieur Victor Grignard.

And again , cause its funny! LOL

Glory, Glory, It's Wolff-Kischner
(to the tune of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic")

Take a ketone carbonyl and then react with hydrazine.
It forms a hydrazone, of course, and water leaves the scene.
An NH from the NH2, hydroxide will attack.
Resonance occurs and then the carbon grabs H back.

Glory, Glory, It's Wolff-Kischner!
Glory, Glory, It's Wolff-Kischner!
Glory, Glory, It's Wolff-Kischner!
Reduce the carbonyl and then the side-chain now is plain.

Hydroxide base is still present, it steals the last H plus.
Now add a little heat, the N2 leaves without a fuss.
The carbon gets a hydrogen producing an alkane.
Now the carbon chain is plain.

Glory, Glory, It's Wolff-Kischner!
Glory, Glory, It's Wolff-Kischner!
Glory, Glory, It's Wolff-Kischner!
Reduce the carbonyl and then the side-chain now is plain.

HEE HEE HEE!

"Synthesis Lament"
(to the tune of "I Could Have Danced All Night")

I cannot synthesize, I cannot synthesize,
No matter how I try.
I cannot make those things with all those bonds and rings
It makes me want to cry.
I cannot learn those stupid condensations
The aldol and the Friedel Crafts,
I only know when (s)he says, "start with carbons three,"
I always fall down on my ass.

I really hate O-Chem, I am not one of them,
That is just how I feel.
IR spectroscopy, it is too hard for me
To see a carbonyl.
I'm overwhelmed by all those mechanisms,
The SN2, is that two steps or one?
I only know when pros begin to push arrows
I wind up thinking that I'm dumb.

    Sodium Chloride

Just a little drop [atom] of chlorine, valence minus one
Swimming through the sea, diggin' the scene, just havin' fun
She's not worried about the shape or size of her outer shell--
      it's fun to ionize
Just a little atom of chlorine with an unfilled shell.

Somewhere in that sea lurks handsome sodium
With enough eletrons on his outside shell plus another one
"Somewhere in this deep blue sea, there is a negative
      for my extra energy
Yes somewhere in this foam, my positive will find a home

Then unsuspecting chlorine felt a magnetic pull
She looked down and her outside shell was full!
Sodium cried "What a gas, be my bride,
And I'll change your name from chlorine to chloride!"

Now the sea evaporates to make the clouds for rain and snow,
Leaving her chemical conpounds in the absence of H2O
But the crystals that wash upon the shor are happy ones,
so if you never thought before,
Think of the love that you eat ... when you salt your meat!

Incidentally, I don't know the appropriate credits for the rest but I believe the Elements Song was first written/performed by Tom Lehrer. Whos songs, if you haven't encountered them before, are pretty generally cool...

    Cod Liver Oil (song)

Cod Liver Oil was a traditional medicinal drink for a lot of Newfoundlanders that was also made into a song. Cod liver oil in the traditional way of manufacture was sun cured and served in bottles in its raw form. The song was written by Johnny Burke (1851-1930), a balladeer from St. John's, Newfoundland. It has been recorded by the Irish band The Dubliners and by Newfoundland folk rock Band Great Big Sea on their album The Hard and the Easy.

         Lyrics

I'm a young married man that is tired of life
Ten years I've been wed to a miserable wife
She does nothing all day but sit down and cry
And prays up to Heaven that soon she will die

        Chorus:
Doctor, o doctor, o dear Doctor John
Your cod liver oil is so pure and so strong
I'm afraid of me life, I'll go down in the soil
If me wife keeps on drinking your cod liver oil

Well a friend of my own came to see me one day
He told my darlin' was pining away
He afterwards told me that she would get strong
If only I'd get a bottle from dear Doctor John

        Chorus

It was then that I purchased a bottle to try
The way that she drank it you'd think she would die
I bought her another it vanished the same
O me wife she's got cod liver oil on the brain

        Chorus

That me wife loves cod liver there isn't a doubt
And a few thousand gallons has made her quite stout
And now that she's stout it's made her quite strong
And now I'm jealous of dear Doctor John

        Chorus

My house it resembles a medicine shop
It's covered with bottles from bottom to top
But then in the mornin' the kettle do boil
O you're sure it's singin' of cod liver oil

        Chorus

    Ground Control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on

    Ground Control to Major Tom
    Commencing countdown, engines on
Check ignition and may God’s love be with you

    Spoken:
Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven, Six, Five, Four, Three, Two, One, Lift-off

This is Ground Control to Major Tom
    You’ve really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it’s time to leave the capsule if you dare

“This is Major Tom to Ground Control
    I’m stepping through the door
And I’m floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today

    For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
    Far above the world
    Planet Earth is blue
And there’s nothing I can do

Though I’m past one hundred thousand miles
    I’m feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much (she knows!)
    Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit’s dead, there’s something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
