How does an amateaur scientist get a paper published?

Steve Chester asked the Naked Scientists:
Hi all. I have a question for the Naked Scientists. It is a little self centred and not the normal type of question you would address but....
I believe I have a proof that there are no odd perfect numbers. How do I go about publishing it or getting it peer reviewed? I am an amateur and have no contact with any "real" scientists or mathematicians.
Thanks for any help.
Steve

Submit the paper to whatever journal you think is most lilely to publish it. They don't care whether you get paid for your work, only whether it is correct. If it looks and sounds professional, they will send it to expert referees who will check your proof, and if it is original and apparently valid, they will publish it.

If you know a friendly maths teacher, ask them to check it for obvious problems.
- I expect that your high-school maths teacher would be delighted to see one of his/her students take on some serious pure mathematics.
