Don't worry Seany, its rarely done on humans but common with some animals, cats, dogs, horses, cattle and some others.

Its done to stop reproduction and makes the animal more passive, less aggressive.

In fact I will be taking Fudge my young tom cat to the vets soon to be neutered (the same thing), so in his case it will be just the sausage!  []

Not now, but castrati used to be not uncommon, and if you came from an impoverished background, it was one way of making a living.

Eunuchs were also used in the harems of the ottoman empire, and within the Chinese civil service.

There are a few records of the last castrati singer. Of course, there always was a problem; how did you identify people who would go on to become good singers when they were young enough that this operation would work?
The simple answer is you couldn't.
That singer wasn't that good an example of the "benefits" of castration. That's what I call a waste.

However, up until 1900 or so, there were several still sining in opera. The last known Italian castrati died in 1920. Before 1800 practically no women sang the soprano line on stage. And - are you prepared for this? - the castrati were the rock stars of their time. Being one did not prevent them from "operating" their "equipment." They were "shooting blanks."
