Does water divining work?

Karen has got in touch to ask:
"We are about to bore for water as we live in Cape Town which is experiencing severe water shortage. Could you please explain how water divining devices work - we have people using a forked branch, a brick (!) and two pieces of wire - I need a scientific explanation of how they could possibly work"
What do you think?

It doesn't work, in all tests involving hidden objects that water diviners claim to be able to detect water diviners perform no better than chance.
