Pangea....will it be back one day ?
« on: 08/05/2007 00:03:19 »
Greetings,

Once upon a time in a galaxy far far away...oh hang on !!...wrong post !!

Once upon a time all the land masses were together as a super -dooper-simply-spiffing continent called Pangaea !

Then with continental drift  and plate tectonics the land masses broke up into what we know them today .

Will the land masses eventually reacquaint themselves with each other again ?

If so...how long will it take ?

..or will the planet not be around long enuff for that to happen ?

YES !!

As for how long - could not tell you but don't hold your breath (see http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=a6bb4ff2af39a86b2390a1ce12b6e037&topic=7676.0)

The reason - first look at this reference http://www.uwgb.edu/dutchs/platetec/plhist94.htm

The ocean ridges are working against each other right now and have been for 350 Million years. When the processes of the earth's mantle cease their current pattern then the chances are 50-50 that the  continents will begin to again merge.

The planet will likely be here, but in what shape I cannot say. Humanity is a passing wind, as are all species.

Will it necessarily be good for mankind if the Pangea forms again?

By the time continents form one landmass again the insects will have become intelligent and eaten all human beings. Seriously, we humans will have gone the way of the dodo - a type of pigeon.
