No they weren't. Priests and monks tried to invoke supernatural powers to explain natural phenomena, which by definition is not science.

The philosophers got back to me, apparently science is the understanding that knowledge is lacking,  to become a scientist all you have to do is aknowledge you do not know.  I may give it a try !
