I just heard that regular consumption of liquorice causes high blood pressure !!  Does it ?

Strange as it seems liquorice can cause dangerously high blood pressure and dangerously low potassium levels (hypokalemia).
It contains glycyrrhizinic acid, which sets off the mechanism which results in high blood pressure.

The liquorice labelling act (2019) has been delayed by Brexit taking all parliamentary discussion time for the past n years. Perhaps when the log jam has cleared ......
Don’t hold ewer breath however, as the focus is shifting north.
Like all things parliamentary, it’s a bit woolly - just as you like it.

PS now that free movement will cease there will be a shortage of imported lamb, so more pressure to use our in-country resources. Sorry to bring bad news.

To be fair, all this only applies to pure liquorice and you would need to eat quite a lot. Most sweets use flavours or have the baddies taken out. However, supplement tablets can be pure and so be careful not to overdose.

Mmm, not sure you would look good as a woolly fly. A nice lamb chop on the other hoof ....

Large amounts of liquorice can have negative effects when eaten daily. Here age obviously a factor. If eaten daily Large amounts of black liquorice (57g or around 2oz) can have negative physical effects. On the other hand Glycyrrhizin can cause potassium levels in the body to fall, triggering abnormal heart rhythms, as well as high blood pressure.
