Does the pneumonia jab prevent pneumonia from COVID-19?
« on: 02/04/2020 17:22:41 »
Carol sent us this:

If a healthy 70+ person contracted the virus and had previously been given a pneumonia jab, could they still get complications like pneumonia? Or is the jab limited to certain pneumonias eg stasis?

Am I right that it's limited to certain pneumococcal bacteria?

The vaccine covers you for Streptococcus pneumoniae infection.

In a study of COVID-19 co-infections, 257 COVID-19 patients in Jiangsu Province (January 22 to February 2, 2020) were studied. In total, 24 respiratory pathogens were found among the patients, and 242 (94.2 %) patients were co-infected with one or more pathogens. Bacterial co-infections were dominant in all COVID-19 patients, Streptococcus pneumoniae was the most common.

So, having the vaccine is a good idea and will help if you get a Streptococcus pneumoniae co-infection.
