Oval-shaped throat and croup - am I at higher risk?
« on: 03/04/2020 09:45:27 »
Listener Alex sent in this question:

I don’t know how common this is or what the medical term for it is, but I was born with an oval-shaped throat. So when I was younger I used to get croup a lot and pretty badly. When I was an infant I was actually hospitalised because of the croup. I am wondering if since I have this defect if I am at higher risk of having worse symptoms if I were to be infected.

I understand that a lot of the risk has to do with how your immune response is, and whether you have other already existing conditions. I am a 19, almost twenty year old college student in the US, and I also understand that there’s not a lot of data out right now, and the data that is out largely comes from China and Italy. I also understand that the danger from this coronavirus largely comes from it poking tiny holes in our alveoli that then can fill with fluid and make it hard/impossible to breathe, so i don’t know how much my throat being misshapen would play into that. Just curious.

I can't find the condition he's referring to - can anyone help?
