What chemicals are in hair gel, and what makes it "gel"?

If i had lovely hair, i'm sure i would be young and hip and style it like the cool kids! What is it about hair gel, that has an effect to make your hair "hold" and possibly look "wet"?

    Could it be Gelatin, no really could it be Gelatin, ok i suppose it could be Gelatin but what is Gelatin :) 


    I GOT IT HAIR GEL IS         gel in a tin         OR PLASTIC CONTAINER :~)
