"If" was written by David Gates & first recorded by his own group, Bread. The other members of Bread were James Griffin, Robb Royer, Michael Botts and Larry Krechtel (although the last 2 were not founder-members).

The song "If" was on the album "Manna", which was released in 1971. It was their 2nd album - the 1st simply being called "Bread".

Bread disbanded in 1973 but reformed in 1977 to release the album "Baby I'm A Want You".

Among other notable songs penned by David Gates are "Everything I Own" (contrary to popular belief, this song was written about his father not his ex-wife), "Guitar Man" & "Make It With You".

Other artists that David Gates worked with are Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Bobby Darin and Merle Haggard.
