Why are UK hairdressers closing but schools staying open?

Here's a message we got from listener Claire:
I don't understand why hairdressers have closed but schools are still open. Hairdressers are wearing masks and visors and so are their clients; they are cleaner than usual, and they take contact information of clients. It seems that hair and beauty are being joined up with pubs and restaurants where I'm sure alcohol has an impact on social distancing.

Opening the schools means that the parents can go back to work.

There are more parents than hairdressers. Votes count.

Yes. I agree. Also, they are giving education priority. In my school, I need to catch up with last academic year’s curriculum by February to do the subjects I want. Including Triple science.

A lockdown was welcome for me earlier, but because the government was slow to act, we have to have a 4 week lockdown.
Even though students need to catch up, I believe that schools should be closed as, firstly, most parents are not working or working from home due to lockdown and, secondly, students will increase the infection rate and might eventually trigger another lockdown or an extension to this one. This will cause mire disruption to students and study. So, in my opinion, it’s better to put school on hold for 4 weeks and get it over with.

Education? In schools? Pull the other one. The primary objective is to keep kids off the streets until they are old enough to sign up for a student debt.

Because they are illogical beyond belief, university students are a primary cause of the spread of corona along with school children, yet they will sit on the fence over whether they wish to stop the virus dead as in Taiwan or let it go like Sweden.
