we have guys and gals, where as it seems more prevalent for a group greeting on American TV to have "guys" as a non gender specific pronoun.

Yes, I’ve worked with quite a few Americans and it seems the non-gender use is pretty universal, to the point where I generally use it myself without thinking. I notice it is not common over here.
