Am I the only one to find weather charts awusing?
« on: 21/06/2021 13:52:06 »
Each morning I am awakened to Sky TVs,s world wide temperature chart and it is interesting to compare temperatures between places such as Kuwait and Stanley for most of the year Kuwait is 40°C hotter but occasionally for one or two days of the year Stanley is hotter!.
Today is the summer equinox and it is a strange fact that the summer and winter ones in the UK  tend to have the same temperatures in the 10 to 12 degree range.
There are plans afoot to widen the orbit of the Earth to reduce global heating I hope nothing comes of it as it will spoil the eclipses

Not serious ones.

Early in April when I first read this article it seemed quite authentic , written by a genuine astronomer as he spoke of Angstoms and ergs.
Quite a few ergs were needed 160 I believe which will have to wait till we finish beveloping our fusion plants which should not be long

Oh no, one of those silent farters. A weapon of unimaginable area clearance capability.

On the other hand if he’s talking about an earth movement of Angstroms ...................!

My main reason for publishing this nonsense (which is now repeated by the Scientific American) was to point out the distortion of values of energy etc that commonly occurs when articles are quoted.
If the original figure for the amount of energy was 10 to the power 60 ergs (10^60) a vast amount this is often quoted as 1060 ergs as pointed by bored chemist a tiny amount.
This does not confuse the mathematical literate and only raises a wry smile but might confuse others !

When did he die? AFAIK nobody has used these units since I graduated.

It might have worked better if you hadn't mistyped it.
