the physics of skimming stones on a pond

why do stones skim accross a pond, is there a correct way to "skim" for maximum ...skims?

    I love skipping stones across the water.. nice round flat ones then hold it just right...flat side up and arm to side pull arm back then wrist goes back coming back forward in a quick sharp release as pointer finger marks trajectory with proper follow through!giving excellent direction and hopefully the required momentum so skip all the way across the pond or river here! LOL  It is fun!
