Are The Naked Scientists Listeners open to interviews?
« on: 19/04/2022 09:41:15 »
I'm looking for people that would be open for a short interview about their experiences listening to The Naked Scientists podcast(s).

I'm writing my master's thesis about podcasts and radio shows, their science communication and how they connect experts and listeners. The Naked Scientists plays a major part in my research and so do their listeners.

Any kind of help would be deeply appreciated!!!

Hi.

   How short?

How regularly do you need to listen?   I listen to about 1 in 5 podcasts when I see them on the front page on this website.  I've only been doing this for a few months.

What security or safety steps do you plan to offer the participants?  For example,  most people using this website are not going to want a face-to-face meeting with a complete stranger.   Some people won't even want you to get their email address or similar information like that.   Can answers be written to questions directly on this forum?

Provided it's safe and not too intrusive, the staff and moderators of this site probably won't mind this thread being used to write the answers or replies in  -  But I am not a moderator and you probably should check with someone first.

Best Wishes.

Many people get scammed on the internet. My sentiments overlap with the concerns that EternalStudent posted in parallel.

It is important to preserve the privacy of readers/listeners, especially when dealing with a request for contact from an unknown person.

Perhaps glesphlep could reduce the "unknown person" barrier by posting details in this thread of his name, university, course, thesis topic and thesis supervisor. Those details are verifiable.

glesphlep could also indicate what type of communication they are interested in for the interview (eg Zoom, mobile phone, etc), and how long they expect the interview to take. Identify the criteria that would be used to select interviewees.

Perhaps people who have verified this identity could then send a personal message to glesphlep, identifying their general location (eg nearest city in the same timezone), and suggesting a suitable time for a discussion. Maybe mention a few details that will help glesphlep decide whether this person is an eligible candidate.

I suggest that interviewees don't give their personal email or phone number to glesphlep. Once a mutually acceptable time is agreed, the interviewee calls glesphlep. On mobile phones, Caller ID should be suppressed.

Post your interview experiences here - does it sound legitimate?

Attempts to scam forum members will be met with a prompt ban - moderator.

Thank you for your replies evan_au and Eternal Student!

To quickly introduce myself; my name is Philippe Glesener, ou should find my profile on LinkedIn. (I'm not able to post external links in this forum) (University Email: p.glesener@Student.maastrichtuniversity.nl).
I am doing my MA studies at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, in a program (ESST: European Studies on Society, Science and Technology) that studies the role of science and technology in our society from a social sciences perspective.
I am writing my master’s thesis with the help of Sound Studies researcher Prof. Karin Bijsterveld.

In my project, I aim to compare podcast and radio shows, as sound media, in how these communicate science to a broad audience, and connect experts and listeners.

My questions to listeners will focus on why they listen to The Naked Scientists, when and how they listen, how they select episodes and their experiences and interactions with the show.
In general, I hope to get different perspectives to be able to analyse diverse listener experiences of the show.

To Eternal Student's questions, I would consider people that are willing to do an audio interview (via Zoom or the preferred platform), as well as using questions and answers in written form. I expect the interview to take about half an hour, but this can of course be adapted depending on availability.
I would of course respect your wishes about recording the meeting, about anonymising your name, and citing or paraphrasing the answers.
If you’re not comfortable with sharing an email address or a social media account, I could also post the written questions on this forum!

Thank you for your help!

This would work.  Audio can be done via zoom or something like discord, all keeping identity anonymous if that is desired.
Written questions can be done right in a topic thread, but there's a danger there of people answering differently with public answers than with private ones. The site PM system can be used to keep answers private from other members, and I don't think this breaks the rules against using PM to 'spam members'.

Without hearing the questions, I'm more of a reader than a listener and have always had trouble absorbing information from audio instead of texts/diagrams. It's been a long time since I've heard a science educational program on the radio. I've seen some great-courses science lectures and have been vastly disappointed in them. Such an opportunity for good visual aids, but no, they just park the camera on a talking head.

I am happy to be interviewed via Zoom - the roughly 11-hour time-zone difference probably means early morning in Europe and evening in Australia. I'll send a PM.

For myself, I listen to many podcasts including The Naked Scientists, mostly while I am driving or walking.

PS: While living in Antwerp, I once drove past Luxembourg (on the highway), but I didn't have time to stop :(

If you want to contact Philippe, you can click on his user name "glesphlep (OP)" in the green box next to his posts; that takes you to his profile.

Click on the "Actions" menu, and select "Send Personal Message"; this brings up a web-based email service.
You can enter your preferred time slot, etc.

Philippe, you may want think about whether you want to post your email address in this thread - that may make it easier for people here to contact you via other email accounts. ...but it also makes it easier for spammers to find you!
It's up to you!

Hi.

Security step 1:
Found:         Prof.  Bijsterveld K.T. (Karin)    listed on the Maastricht University website.
https://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/about-um/people?profile=Bijsterveld

* Bijsterveld.JPG (66.13 kB . 1130x471 - viewed 2109 times)

Security step 2:
Her email address is listed.  I was going to send her an email.  However, shall we try to avoid her email box being flooded with mail?  Let's try and have only one person send an email and display the reply here.  I can do this  BUT  other users have no reassurance about who I am.  It might be better if one of the moderators did that.  Halc suggested the idea   although   Evan_au looks like he will be the first to be interviewed.   I would have thought it makes sense for one of those two moderators to do the email.

What am I doing now?    Nothing,  I'll wait for feedback from someone else.

Best Wishes.

I've sent an email to Karin (academic supervisor). I expect at least a 12-24 hour delay before I get a response.

I received confirmation from Karin, so feel free to PM Philippe if you would like to be involved:

Dear Evan,

Thanks for contacting me. Philippe Glesener is one of my students at Maastricht University indeed. He is doing the ESST program (a European program on science, technology and society) and examines the ways in which science podcasts and radio shows create engagement with their listeners. Hope you allow him to find interviewees.

Many thanks in advance,

An observation: I understand that The Naked Scientists was broadcast on a local radio station in Cambridge, but Dr Chris Smith was an early adopter of podcasts to provide a wider audience.

Some radio networks podcast all their shows, to allow flexibility in listening/viewing time & extend geographical reach.

So the difference between radio and podcast content may not be that great.

Indeed, this is an interesting observation! Most radio shows are also available as podcasts. Nevertheless I think there can be some subtle differences between podcasts that also air on radio and those that are only available in podcast form. For instance shows on the radio have to stay within a certain time frame to fit the radio schedule. As you pointed out it also influences the geographical reach, I think the listening audiences of podcasts versus radio tend also to differ in age. (Berry, R. (2006). Will the iPod Kill the Radio Star?. Convergence: The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies, 12(2), 143-62.)

I did an interview with Philippe earlier this week - I suggest that:
- Philippe generates the invite (eg via Zoom), as then he can record the interview (if you agree).
- You read the questions above, and maybe jot some notes
- I was trying to remember events from many years ago; I found it helpful to look at:
- My posting history on the Forum (all the way back to Post #1)
- My email history with the PM app on the forum
- My podcast listening history in my podcast player
- I decided to show my identity in the thesis as my username on this forum: evan_au
- Any other hints from others?

Hi.

I'm hoping the OP will give us a short update on how the project went.... whenever it's finished or time presents itself etc.

Don't you think question H  :   "What other questions would you have liked me to ask you?"   was a brave inclusion?
What did you choose?   I chose a couple of questions on sports and popular music for that section.   I hope that will be ok for everyone.

Best Wishes.

Hi.

It's not my website but I would have thought getting some information would be great.   I would have thought just a short section, perhaps your conclusions or main results would be enough.   Some people do attach large documents at the bottom of their posts  (especially in the new theories section) but you'll probably get more readership if you put a short section directly into a post.

Best Wishes.
