Sorry about the site problems last night, we got featured on digg, and the default server settings were not very well set up for it. Hopefully we will manage better next time.

Not good if the moment we get some publicity, the first experience this rush of new blood has is negative (but I realise that is something that if it was not anticipated, would have been difficult to avoid).

Well, no. Obviously not good.
Unfortunately high traffic is quite a difficult thing to test. I'm sure bright ideas for testing the new set up would be welcomed... if we can avoid a repeat of last night I for one would be much pleased (why do these things always happen in the middle of the night?)

The only way of really stress testing for high volume (aside from having thousands of people do it) is by using automated scripts to try and simulate lots of user access - but it will never be exactly the same as the real thing, and you have to try and be a bit clever even to get close to what real users are likely to be doing.

Yes, sorry, a large part of the problem was that I made unwarrented assumptions about how well apache had been configured by our hosts. I have since been looking into detecting when it happens again and using other servers to host parts of the data to share the load.

Why is the forum clock 1 hour fast? Not a big problem, but at times my small brain does get confused.

That's because you've set your time on the forum to GMT and we're now on BST - 1 hour backwards. When we put the clocks back it'll be right again. In the meantime you can set your time to GMT-1.

The site still appears to me to be very flaky - sometimes I get in, sometimes I do not.

When I went into "Search Site" on the home page, my search request came up with several pages of answers. The first page was fine, but when I pushed "next" or "2", then the search string became "Search Site" and I got a number of pages telling me about all the pages with "search" and "site" on them. Not so interesting!
