OK, Karen - you're close enough. It was a bit of a trick question. He legally changed his name to Axl Rose in 1986! However, hardly anyone knows that and usually say Bill Bailey.

Are you sure? Everything I've found said Rose was his original last name.

Yes that is what I read also. It was in 86.

D'OH! Silly me. I put it the wrong way round [:I] - yes, it was Rose then Bailey.
But that doesn't alter the fact that his name now is legally W Axl Rose.
