How many titles are applicable to naked science contributors?
« on: 22/12/2022 22:04:56 »
Recently I noticed that I have achieved "heroic" status( not surprising !! ). Seriously, how many titles are there? Also wishing everyone a happy holiday over the next~10days. I do not observe Christmas myself, not being a devotee of mammon, the "boss"( alancalverd vernacular ) calls me a Grinch, whatever that may be.

Perhaps 8 titles: Newbie, 1st timer, Junior, Full, Senior, Hero, King, and God
Maybe I missed a tier.

There are sites with nearly 20 'ranks' and it is interesting to see them try to come up with names for each of the tiers.
Unfortunately, the rank means nothing except 'blabber-mouth'. Some of the highest ranking members are just prolific trolls, and there's been some members that seem to be potentially very valuable contributors, but only end up making a few posts.

Not really sure.   Depending on how you look on it, you can invert the importance of the titles.   They show how many posts you have made and nothing about.... the quality of a post,  the nature of the post,  or anything else.
A more relevant statistic could be  "appreciation per post" which could be calculated by taking the number of positive comments you have obtained and dividing that by the number of posts you have made.   The key is that the number of posts you have made then appears in the denominator of the statistic.
There isn't any consistent use of the "say thanks" feature anyway.   Some people have suggested they will use it just to mark the post as having been read.   Others guard it fiercely and rarely award such a mark.   There are also people who will mark it with a "say thanks" whenever the reply has been along the lines of "I agree with you" instead of "No, I don't agree" regardless of whether the latter type of reply was well reasoned and may have taken twice the time to research and write (I guess that is just being human).
This is a small forum with perhaps two dozen regular users.   By the time you've made perhaps 30 posts, most people know enough to have made their own opinions without any recourse to the limited statistics available on your profile.   On that basis, you really don't need to be worried @paul cotter

Best Wishes.

I say thanks if I learn something new or if some post answers a question in an elegant and comprehensive manner. Sometimes I miss a post and add the thanks much later. I am also guilty of saying thanks when a poster agrees with me!

An old favorite cartoon is of two elegant women with wine glasses and the speech bubble

"I'm awful at remembering names but they're usually happy with Tarzan, Big Boy or Einstein".
