An Open Question To A Moral Nihilist...
« on: 10/02/2023 13:57:35 »
Just one question I always wanted to ask a moral nihilist.

Why wouldn't science apply to human ethics too. Science can help us build a better mouse trap, bake a better cake, fight a better war, etc. Shouldn't it help us find the best moral system.

Plus I'm guessing even moral nihilists think there's a moral system better than the rest. Mercy instead of cruelty? Love instead of hate? Happiness and well-being instead of hardship? And when is inflicting pain ever right? Because isn't pain always a horrible thing to go thru? Who ever says it's nice? Some people think it's sometimes necessary or unavoidable. But I've never heard anyone say it's nice or they enjoyed it.

See what I mean?

The ethical questions I ask are "would you like it if I did it to you?" and "would you do it to your nearest and dearest?"

Avoidance of pain is the instinctive response to the first question, but best practice may involve temporary pain in removing an infected tooth or amputating a gangrenous limb, on the one hand, or mercy killing as an alternative to unremitting pain.

Real humans have some idea of right and wrong. Only philosophers can discuss moral nihilism as though it mattered, and they do so at your expense.

An Open Question from a Closed Mindset...

A Moral Nihilist might not feel motivated enough to Answer..

Especially when your " Guessing " on their way of thinking is Incorrect.

P.S. - To Live is to Suffer, to Survive is to find some Meaning in the Suffering.

Imagine what would happen to someone who can't feel pain. They won't know that real damages has been done to their body, and they would be more likely to die, especially when their understanding of physical reality hasn't been adequately developed yet, such as babies and little children.
Ability to feel pain can be seen as a defense mechanism against physical harms, which is a product of evolutionary process.
You can find masochism in dictionaries.

True. I've come across a rare case of a woman who can't feel pain and managed to fracture her own pelvis whilst giving birth - the muscles are actually stronger than the bones.
