How to kill, both natural and medical, aerobic bacteria in the gut?
« on: 01/06/2023 11:51:55 »
Hello

Is there a way, both natural and medical, to kill aerobic bacteria in the gut?

I think bloating is caused from these and I would like to know how to kill them. I know Rifaximin is killing some that cause ammonia.

Please note: this is not seeking medical advice, just scientific evidence/opinion

Thanks!

Probably not; certainly not safely.

Why the aerobes? From memory( hence caution! ) I think most of the human gut biome are anaerobes. Anaerobes would be more prone to gas production as their energy is supplied by glycolysis like mechanisms. Messing with the biome via antimicrobials can have dire consequences with overgrowth of dangerous species that are normally kept in check by the usual commensals.

Antibiotics. Proper strong stuff from hospitals. I have heard of doctors end up prescribing those dainty little bottles from the supermarket that are the gut bacteria stuff.

If you think that (UK) supermarkets sell antibiotics you are not well enough informed to be giving advice.

Antibiotics are noted for upsetting teh stomach- bloating is a fairly typical symptom.
PC is suggesting treating bloating with drugs likely to induce it.

It's as if he didn't understand this bit.

I think Petrochemicals was talking about non-prescription "live" mixtures of various "normal" gut microbes.
- I've seen them sold from refrigerators in chemist/pharmacy shops, with prices that seem proportional to the number of bacteria that they claim to contain...
- I've seen supermarkets selling a variety of yoghurts
- And then there are various fermented foods containing live bacteria, like non-sterilised cheeses, sauerkraut, kimchi, koji, kefir, etc

To keep these single-strain bacteria alive in your gut, you would need to keep feeding them a diet that they like.
- And plenty of roughage to give them a biological niche
- A healthy gut has a wide variety of microbes competing and complementing each other, and breaking down your food into molecules you can digest

I also think he was.
And, if he thinks that's anything to do with antibiotics, my point stands.

Just at the point where we're beginning to discover how benficial the gut biome is, with sick patients making remarkable improvements after receiving a faecal transplant, we've got someone here who wants to kill it all off.   ::)

Ahh thank goodness for the disclaimer.

The question asks for something to kill bacteria in the gut, the hospital grade antibiotics will do the job, hospital ergo not without very serious doctor prescribing. Killing the bacteria ergo no bacteria ergo needing something to replace the bacteria ergo little hospital pots of microbiotics or gut bacteria.

Ergo I wonder what happens if you drop antibiotics into bacteria culture is it like coke and mentos.?

"Hospital grade antibiotics"? No need to go to hospital. Clindamycin, which is used for treating dental abscesses among other conditions, is probably  the worst in terms of wiping out the natural biome and allowing all kinds of nasties to proliferate. There are a small number of antibiotics restricted to hospital use, principally because they can only be administered intravenously.
