Complaint about Windows 11
« on: 12/10/2023 21:18:17 »
Hi.

Why are the things you can adjust in "settings" not joined up to the things you can adjust in "control panel"?

I guess I'm just too old now.   In the good 'ol days, whenever you wanted to adjust anything you could always get to it through control panel.   These days, you can't.    I wanted to switch my camera on.   I can do that by going through "settings" (which could be accessed straight from the windows icon on the strip at the bottom) but if you went through control panel then it seems there are no links or routes you could take to get to that setting.

Why do they have to keep changing everything?  I liked the old days of Windows XP where you turned the computer off by clicking on "Start" instead of anything called "End".   Those days made sense.

Best Wishes.

Hi, ES. Don't get me started, as they say. In my opinion, WINDOWS is a very poor operating system, and has been for a very long time. The last stable form of windows was windows 3.1, which was back in the early nineties. Stability is my main beef but I agree that changing things that don't need to be changed is utterly pointless and counterproductive.

Not sure that clicking "start" to switch something off is a good idea. "End" is at least logical, though the "end" button on my keyboard doesn't seem to do anything and there isn't a visible software END on the screen.

However I agree that there was nothing wrong with XP, and I'm annoyed that my flight simulator  won't work on anything later. It's almost as infuriating as the latest "upgrade" to this forum, that renders practically every nonalphanumeric symbol as ? unless you type multiple ?s  in which case it generates some stupid childish cartoon.

The End key on my computer puts the cursor to the end on the line. I use it quite a lot, and if I pressed it one day and found it had just closed the app I was in the middle of using I'd be a bit miffed.

Yes let's call it an "upgrade".

74186100fb183f1d670d4dd6ebaaedea.gif

That's what LaTeX markup code   for the integral (w.r.t. x)   of   1/x     looks like.   This (see below) is the markup code that was used.

Code: [Select]
[tex]\int_1^\infty\frac{1}{x}  dx [/tex]

Upgrades or features like this have been in place for quite a while now.    So, I would think the forum guide for LaTeX needs to be updated to reflect the upgrade that has been made.
For example, this post (   https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=45718.msg397742#msg397742  ) is permanently locked in place near the top of the first forum section  (General Science --->  TNS Posting Tips and tricks FAQ ).   It describes how to use LaTeX markup language in this forum but it is now redundant and should be replaced with a short phrase like  "for the benefit of readers, mathematical notation wll not be permitted".

Best Wishes.

The best I see it you are not computer "savvy" !

Note: any good browser has a sub menu showing various character charsets to "force use" with the browser page data translator, too the browser settings can enforce only one font to use!
Overall, your collection of fonts should be coherent of both the charsets available and the symbols they must render!

So! Why hypertext markup in a science forum..."html entities" are what should be used!
The whole point of rendered markup crossing many charsets!
The number of symbols covered by "html entities" is immense!
It includes most scientific notations, and maths statistics symbols
It is the correct way to present public cross language scientific data.
Note: CSS and HTML multi lingual pages are recommended and almost always Unicode UTF-8 except catering for Chinese. Chinese is usually UTF-16

https://onedrive.live.com/?redeem=aHR0cHM6Ly8xZHJ2Lm1zL3UvYy85ODQxYjc3ZTYxODI0NDg0L0VVdXhmTG9DSFA5TXBONjJLdDhod0xFQjhRMDg0SE5GYzVLZXRRVWtDTVdEN0E&cid=9841B77E61824484&id=9841B77E61824484%21sba7cb14b1c024cffa4deb62adf21c0b1&parId=root&o=OneUp

You can type "control panel" into the file explorer window address bar , and also choose between the new view layout and the classic control panel layout.
The classic version will group pieces the way it did in 10 and before, so you should be able to plug and play or add hardware.
Too, if you have a new camera it may need drivers, so go to the manufacturers site and download the driver for the OS.
Too, the is a windows admin app in the start menu, however, W11 uses a system of popping a special search window it names "settings".
This difference is because lower level hardware controls of the OS are now conjoined into the modern bios replacement called UEFI.
UEFI of the machine that controls what we're bios settings are now the common base off all OS eliminating many setup setting  mistakes.

X32 software apps should be installed to the x32 program files folder for better recognition at app startup, not the "program files" folder.

Of character symbols "render", not the least of it.
Troubles start if the app requires "a specific" font, not merely it's symbol character.
Too, the document may been created under a specific charset such as UTF8 or UTF16 as a business admin network or multi lingual organisation, or as some of you may use, Windows 1252 or iso-1252.
Normal English "EN" language character set is based in ASCII otherwise known as Latin-1, however, many more characters are required and the usual nowadays is iso-8859-1 charset.
The software, the keyboard and the "app" charset setting must all be the same charset setting with the OS base language charset scripting(human language glyphs) , hence the rough guide "locale", the country and timezone.
That all correct, we can now look at rendering the symbols characters, and that requires a software app in the OS called a "font server".
While a charset has an official ISO standard name and alias names(well known less official), a font has its "name" and a "group name", group, being font type e.g. sans, times, bitstream.
The only real  specification type in its name is "normal" "bold" "italic" or default - undefined e.g. as mentioned before, by , only the group name!
So as you can guess, the font name must have the glyph symbol mapped to its bitmap image file to render a character.
( there is also the "data buffer" for the character sequences, with the window buffer for the screen (head) video display map *there is a piece of hardware can be added called a "head splitter" or signal generator splitter. You can use two screens as one after changing screen resolution to a custom size, or you can render multiple head units).

Of "browsers" that normally handle html pages and internetworking, HTML is a text and image "rendering" application from a specified format called hypertext markup language. Part of most applications is a set of alternates to mouse clicking using keys, apart W3C "accessibility standards", too, in html tagging there are tags and attributes to add page specific keys to operate actions of either custom idiosyncratic or standardised e.g. "tabbing" the focus of the cursor along to each page sub part. (The OS also has standardised "key' set functions).

Dependent your model of main board, a quantity of the keyboard (as should be connected/plugged to the main board at time of adjustment) can be set with the UEFI to have default actions for "Function" f-Number keys. The function keys and others can be enabled or disabled also.
More idiosyncratic actions can be set for keys and key press combination at the OS control panel level on the keyboard.

And what was continually forgotten to mention, the actual piece of keyboard hardware often corresponds a specific language, covering a limited set of ISO charsets. Too, if there is a driver program for it at the manufacturer site it is wise to download it and install it for specific functionality of the keys.

Hi.

It's been about a year since this thread was last added to.  I probably won't be following this thread any longer but thank you for your opinions.

Yes, I'm really stupid but....  I can stand on one leg with my eyes closed for about 2 minutes before falling over.  I've got a good sense of balance.

Best Wishes.

All computers seem to be crap Mssr Student, vain design orientated garbage that snarls up and fails. Imagine how well your computer would work if done on a utilitarian basis on 8 bit design. All the boxes that pop up email sign ups permissions verifications and general commercial garbage of the Internet are slowly rendering it a nightmare, coupled to that the programme conflicts cookies adverts fancy graphics format differences video boxes and sheer computer complication make computers nigh on useless.

Computer programmers and engineers forget that people who use computers do different things than computers and are not in a position to spend all day doing computer stuff and nothing else.

I remember the early cartridge computer consoles, never ever failed, quick and never became slow. If only my computers worked as well. Progress.

My main problems with the replacement laptop I bought, too much commercial offerings on the commercial sidebar.
However, you can remove it as too many pop up notification if you go to the "control panel".

The reason for these newer kernels is three new computing systems.

1. 64 bit processor and FAT64 file system along with UTF-64 text encoding (a little compressed with the point there)

2. UEFI aka bios has replaced traditional chipset bios-MBR system  (rather than a small computer starting a large computer and loading it's OS for it, the two systems are combined with the main OS so it has reach into the bios for better in use control)

3. The main reason, OS using multi core remains a little in its infancy , the OS requires to manage both RAM and cores during multiple separate jobs running simultaneous together. The underlying programmes assembled into the OS have improved immensely. I was using Slackwaren15.0 recently ran a video at the same time writing to the USB flash it was coming from through a hub shows it is all operating astoundingly better.(windows does much the same during jobs) NB: 8GB RAM since Win11 is a minimum.
