All rna viruses are prone to variant production. The greatest danger we face is from influenza viruses, assuming no other zoonoses arise. Just look at the devastation the "Spanish flu" caused ~100 years ago, makes covid look like a minor irritation. This scenario could easily happen again and with the current population density coupled with air travel the outcome would be catastrophic
