Looking at the variants ciculating the charts look very different now than previously https://covariants.org/per-country

23f aka EG.5.1 https://covariants.org/ has failed to reach more than 60% of cases in most counries. Most of the exceptions to this are countries which have had least covid so far. In most countries we are seeing much more of a mixture of variants than previously.

A simple explanation for this could be that some people have an immunity to EG.5.1 (perhaps because of different outcomes of affinity maturation from previous infections & vaccinations). Different people could have differing levels of immunity to different variants, so that variants are not competing for the same hosts. Well that's what comes to my mathamatician mind. So it's probably not the only possible explanation. I'd be interested to hear other ideas.

Interestlngly this explanation makes a prediction. If the hotch potch of variants is because of immunity, it follows that each variant can only affect a subgroup of the population. This would mean a signifficant reduction in R and would predict much lower rates of infection from here on in.

Indeed Zero, it is still around. The boss tested positive this morning and I am now waiting patiently for the inevitable onslaught. The positive aspect is that it appears no worse than a regular seasonal cold, so far.

Non sequitur, I'm afraid. Indeed vice versa. The variant is "battle hardened" by contact with, say, one form of immunity. It is thus demonstrated to overcome that immunity but may not have lost its infectivity for those not blessed with it.

Hi Zer0, thank you for your concern. I have very mild symptoms which would not stop me from doing anything I would normally do. The "boss" now appears to be on the mend. I was supposed to be working today but stayed home to take care of herself. However I did manage to achieve the necessary goal by talking a less technical person through the procedure by phone(generator reassembly).

Covid definitely appears less pathogenic now. The boss felt unwell but not seriously so for ~8 days and is back to normal now. I had two days of vaguely perceptible symptoms. As a previous poster had suggested this pattern looks very similar to the so called Russian flu that started ~1890 and is suspected to have morphed into one of the coronavirus "colds" that only cause minor symptoms.

Just look at the devastation the "Spanish flu" caused ~100 years ago, makes covid look like a minor irritation. This scenario could easily happen again and with the current population density coupled with air travel the outcome would be catastrophic

I doubt before the flu jab a virus like covid 19 would have been noticed. But today we have 2 things, people reliant on vaccines for protection and an older populace who have relied on medicine throughout their life. Given during 1800s people did well to reach 50 and did it from their own biological resistance (or not) in a far more microbial active time, there is no doubt what so ever that it will happen again, I just cannot understand why this one took about 70 years.

UK life expectancy in 1800 was 40 years. Most folk died from infectious diseases that have pretty much been eradicated by civil engineering.
