C and K In Latin.

Why did the ancient Latin alphabet have both a C and a K? They both had the exact same sound in classical Latin. So why did they need two letters for them then? Or did they have the exact same sound?

Difference between choo-choo and kookaburra. The "hard c" in English is voiced from a different part of the mouth from k, and c is modified by the next letter: "ice cream" compared with "like" - k is never modified.
