dog fleas and the colour red

cats and dogs wear flea collars that are red. Is this down to the colour or something within the collar? Do red haired dogs get less fleas?

We've had some flea collars which were made of some strange rather opaque material, but which were not red. I'm certain we've also had some of the more traditional collars in other colours. It could be something as benign as marketing.....

OF course this should start "Our cat's have....."
