The cycle of eruptions of Thira/Santorini is one that continues today, with several minor eruptions in the past century. Any time the magma chamber is full, it is liable to experience a major explosion.

The Minoan eruption in mid-2nd century BC was particularly devastating, with an estimated 60km³ of rock ejected into the atmosphere.

The date of the eruption is still uncertain by about 50-100 years, so I don't see that it could be tied to an eclipse in February 1613.

The Earth's surface is deformed every day by about 1 foot (30cm) by the tidal effects of the Sun and Moon. This tidal deformation is hardly any different between an eclipse every 19 years or so, and the two times every month when the Earth, Sun and Moon line up, but not close enough to cause an eclipse.

In any case, I am hoping to see for myself, later in the year.

I am booked to visit Thira/Santorini in September 2017, and I'm hoping to visit the ruins of Akrotiri.
