Could a tight helmet affect my skull shape or size?
« on: 20/07/2017 05:53:38 »
Hello friends,

I recently purchased a helmet, for climbing, of circumference 55-61 cm.

As I know, my head’s circumference is 57 cm.

After the purchase, I went home and I tried it.

The helmet was adjusted at 55 cm and I did not noticed it.

I felt a strong pressure around my head and I removed the helmet after some seconds.

Do you think that the helmet affected my skull size (from the high pressure)?

Moreover, how I managed to fit the helmet on my head, even for seconds, since my skull’s circumference is >55cm?

Thank you in advanced.

No, it's very unlikely that temporarily wearing a tight helmet is going to cause any lasting changes to the size or shape of your skull. Were you to wear it indefinitely then it could potentially cause shape changes because bones do remodel themselves over time, but this would take a long time. I'd recommend returning to the shop for one that is a better fit.

Just to add to what Chris said. Most climbing helmets I've used have a degree of flex and give in the headband which helps to absorb shocks, but it also means it will give somewhat when you push it on.

Some traditional societies do this intentionally. But it really only works well on babies.
