The announcement this week of the discovery in the south of England of some fossilised mammalian teeth death dating back 147M years has got palaeontologists excited about the origins of our own species:

One of the interesting points about animals like these is that they are likely to have been nocturnal to escape dinosaur predation. One the dinosaurs bit the dust courtesy of the asteroid that arrived about 65M years ago, these tiny mammals had their moment in the spotlight. Although their nocturnal origins meant that most of them still tend to come out only at night...
